The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) guidelines are in place to make sure that businesses are accessible by all, including those with disabilities. This has recently been interpreted to include business websites in addition to physical locations.

What Does this Mean for Chiropractic Websites?

While such guidelines are specific to the U.S. market, we anticipate a similar push in clients outside of the U.S. (Australia, Canada, UK, and elsewhere).

Despite a lack of clarity in the regulations, the Department of Justice has an extensive list of suggestions through its Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, Levels A and AA.

While these are not legal guidelines, they go beyond the current ADA guidelines and will ensure your website is accessible to people with disabilities. (For instance, the coding of your site must be readable by assistive technologies such as screen-readers that read web pages out loud and are often used by the blind.)

And while the forthcoming ADA regulations will apply specifically to businesses in the United States, we will be updating all of our client websites because we feel making our websites accessible to people with disabilities is the right thing to do.

Updates You Can Expect to See

An “Accessibility Widget” has been added to every website. This widget provides options for your website visitor depending on the assistance they need. Here’s what it looks like:

In addition to the widget, an “Accessibility” link will be added to the footer of your website that links to a Web Accessibility Statement (like this) explaining the efforts being made to make your site accessible to everyone.

Keeping a website accessible is a continuous effort as new guidelines are released and technologies change.
